Emily M. Hagert

MILFORD - Emily M. (Givans) Hagert, 99, of Milford, Del., died Monday, June 25, 2012, at The Milford Center. Mrs. Hagert was born in Snow Hill, Md,. and was the daughter of the late Ernest W. and Emma (Hudson) Givans. She was a graduate of the Salisbury Normal School, now known as Salisbury State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She became an elementary school teacher in Salisbury, Md. in the 1930's. She met her future husband Edward when she brought her students to WSAL Radio on a field trip. Edward was an Engineer at the station. He soon was employed by the Federal Government and they began traveling with his new job. Their son Hugh was born in Milford, Conn., and their daughter Judi was born in Nashua, N.H. Emily and Edward finally settled and made their home in Baltimore, Md. in the early 1950's. Emily became a bank teller at the Provident Savings Bank where she remained for 15 years until her retirement in 1965. Following Edwards retirement in 1973, they chose to make their retirement home in Milford, Del., moving there in 1974. Emily was a member of the Reformation Lutheran Church, the Milford Senior Center, the Milford Chapter of AARP and the Milford Garden Club. Mrs. Hagert was an avid gardener, loved putting together puzzles and enjoyed spending her nickels at the Casino. Her greatest joy was spending time with her two children; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and three sisters, all of Salisbury, Md. She is survived by a son, Hugh J. Hagert and his wife Carol of Centreville, Md.; a daughter, Judith L. Gawor and her husband Leo, of Hendersonville, N.C.; two grandsons, Christopher J. Hagert and his wife Christie of Purcellville, Va., Nathan A. Gawor of Big Sky, Mont.; and a granddaughter, Kristin A. Hagert of Centreville, Md.; two great grandchildren, Harris and Hudson Hagert of Purcellville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Emily is also survived by a loving and devoted neighbor, friend and caregiver Sallie Metzner of Milford. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Milford Garden Club, c/o Barbara Derue, 17 E. Bull Rush Drive, Milford, DE. 19963, in Mrs. Hagert's memory. Services and interment will be private. Arr. by Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, DE.
