DOVER - Elizabeth "Betty" Porter passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was born Feb. 13, 1933 in Baltimore, Md.
Betty graduated from The Catholic High School of Baltimore and embarked on the life of a military wife, traveling throughout the United States and Bermuda. She was active with the Air Force Wives Club, serving in several positions and with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. She finally settled in Smyrna, and among other jobs, worked as a substitute teacher in the Smyrna School District and later took a position at the Smyrna Library. Betty was also an active member of the American Legion.
Betty liked to read and paint in her spare time and never missed an opportunity to go dancing. She dearly loved her pets. She took great joy in spending time with her children and her friends and whenever her path would cross with her children's childhood friends or former students, she immediately was able to recall everything about them. Her memory for details astounded even her grandchildren.
After relocating to Dover in 2009, Betty continued to amass a whole new group of friends and was always there to lend a helping hand. The family celebrates the fact that she was able to live independently right up to her passing.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jack Price; and her son-in-law, Bill Kelly.
She is survived by her children, John Porter, Lori Kelly, and Gary (Carolyn) Porter; her grandchildren, Michael Porter, Matthew (Rowena) Porter, Abigail (Mike) Hansen, Clifton (Megan) Porter, Colleen (Bryan) Jones, Richard (Tina) Taylor and Katherine (Jim) Wirick; her great-grandchildren, Destiny, Alexis and Rhett Hansen, Olivia Porter, Reghan Jones, Lilyanna, Dominic and Calli Porter, Jeremy Wirick and Jessica (Justin) Land, and Aaron and Raya Taylor; and her brothers, Jim (Millie) Price and Joe (Mitzi) Price.
The family will receive visitors at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018, with a memorial service at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
