Dr. Elizabeth Ferguson Phillips, 86

SEAFORD - Dr. Elizabeth Ferguson Phillips of Seaford died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, in the Methodist Manor House, Seaford. She was 86.

Ms. Phillips was born May 7, 1920, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Dr. V. Lay and Martha Phillips. She was raised in Smyrna.

She graduated as the salutatorian of the 1937 class of John Bassett Moore High School. Although she was extremely interested in chemistry, she decided to follow her father's path and enrolled in the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

Upon graduation, Ms. Phillips passed the licensing exam and became the first woman optometrist to practice in Delaware. In 1944, after a brief period working with her father, she opened her own practice in Georgetown, where she continued her practice for over 40 years, retiring in 1985.

She was active in the Delaware Optometry Association, the American Optometry Association, the Red Cross, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, the Sussex County Republican Women, the Wesley United Methodist Church in Georgetown, the American Field Service and the Georgetown Historical Society.

Ms. Phillips was also actively involved in the Delaware Federation of Business and Professional Women for over 60 years, and the National Association of Parliamentarians.

In her spare time, she traveled extensively, including several trips around the world. She also enjoyed reading.

Ms. Phillips retired to Rehoboth Beach and then to the Methodist Manor House in 1999.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a dear friend, Julia Arri, in 2005.

She is survived by a cousin and her husband, Betty and Bob Williams of New Hampshire.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Delaware Federation of Business and Professional Women or the J. Louis Blumberg Chapter, American Parkinson Disease Association, 332 Gerard Ave., Elkins Park, PA 19207.
