Wyoming - Edward F. Thornley passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, in Cadia Silverside Nursing Center. Wilmington. Ed was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Galena, MD., to the late, James & Catherine Thornley. Edward had worked most of his life as a carpenter. He served proudly in the United States Navy, during WW II. as an electricians mate 2nd. Class; where he served aboard the USS Winged Arrow AP170 in the South Pacific. He was was part of the invasion of many islands including Saipan, Philippines, New Guinea, Iwo Jima, and many others. He also earned 4 Battle Engagement Stars. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church, Dover, where he had served on the building committee & board of trustees. He was also a former member of the Odd Fellows. Ed was an avid supporter of Caesar Rodney Sports, and attended may football games at C.R.H.S., and also at Wesley College. He also was a Philadelphia Phillies Fan. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Violet (Radish) Thornley; two brothers, Ralph & James Thornley; and three sisters, Catherine Kemp, Gladys Johnson, & Peggy Best. Edward is survived by three children, Iris Jane Salber, of Dingmans Ferry, PA.; Robin Jill Thornley, of Dover; and Jeffrey Todd Thornley, of Smyrna; four grandchildren, April Thornley, of Chicago, Illinois; Susan Salber, of Dallas, TX.; Taylor & Christopher Thornley, of Smyrna; and three great-grandchildren, Gia, Max, & Lily Tobias, of Dallas, TX. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, in Pippin Funeral Home, Inc. 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE; where services will take place 11 am, Saturday. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
