Dr. Frank Thomas Hopkins, 81

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Dr. Frank Thomas Hopkins of Chestertown died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, in Chester River Hospital Center, Chestertown. He was 81.

Dr. Hopkins, son of Hastings and Ella Hopkins, was born Nov. 1, 1926, in Baltimore.

He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy on the USS North Carolina.

Dr. Hopkins attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Haverford in 1949 and remained close friends with many classmates.

Dr. Hopkins married Grace Phillis of Bryn Mawr, Pa., in 1949.

He went to Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore and completed his internal medicine residency on the Osler Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1956.

Dr. Hopkins did a fellowship in cardiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

He subsequently practiced medicine at the Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Dr. Hopkins was a tireless, highly respected physician, who was truly devoted to positively influencing the lives of his patients by delivering the highest quality of care.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed tennis, sailing and photography.

Dr. Hopkins was a member of the Merion Cricket Club, Corinthian Yacht Club and International Lightning Association.

He spent many idyllic summers with friends and family in Kentmore Park on the Sassafras River.

In 1996, Dr. Hopkins retired with the love of his life, Grace, to their home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Together, they sailed with their closest friends exploring the Chesapeake Bay and other places around the world.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Caroline Hoyle; sons, Dr. James T. Hopkins and his wife Kathleen of Greenville, Del., Dr. Leigh H. Hopkins and his wife Dr. Jacqueline Hopkins of Bryn Mawr and Douglas R. Hopkins and his wife Joy of Newtown, Pa.; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown.

Interment will be in Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.

Instead of flowers, contributions may be sent to Presbyterian Church of Chestertown, 905 Gateway Drive, Chestertown, MD 21620; or Heron Point, 501 E. Campus Ave., Chestertown, MD 21620; or Alzheimer's Fund, 209C Milford St., Salisbury, MD 21804.
