He died Saturday, April 17, 2010, in Vacaville, Calif., at Winsor House Convalescent Hospital of a heart attack. Anthony Sollazzo was born Oct. 26, 1933, in New Brunswick, N.J., in humble surroundings. In his childhood he spent much of his time playing commando with his younger brother, "Leo," and friends "Sonny" and "Paulie." His hobby was building WWII model airplanes from kits. Later his hobby was photography, and he had his own darkroom in the basement of his home. "Tony" was the first in his family to attend High School. He graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1952. He studied at Rutgers College, Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, N.J. He married his college sweetheart, Helena Doris Schmitchen, and started his family. He attended Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland, where he earned his DDS in 1960. His general practice residency as a dentist was with the U.S. Public Health Service in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, for one year. He was then stationed with the Coast Guard in Cape May, New Jersey, then spent two years in Harlem, Montana as a dentist with the Indian Health Service. He had private practices in Fairfield and Kendall Park, N.J., from about 1965-2003, when he retired. He lived in Branchburg, N.J. from 1969 - 2008 with his wife and family, and moved in with his daughter Katherine and her husband, Gregory Jansen, in Fairfield, Calif., almost two years ago. Anthony Sollazzo was an active member of Kiwanis International. He continued to enjoy photography and videography, and loved to travel, especially with his family, to nearly every National Park and Monument in the U.S. He enjoyed watching movies, such as musicals, cowboy movies, and old classics such as Marty, The Magnificent Seven, and Carousel. He was always ready to discuss the latest information about space and the universe with family and friends, watch a nature program or "How It's Made," or explore the world of classical music and art with his wife. At the end of his life he loved to read the Time Life 40 volume series about WWII. Anthony Sollazzo is predeceased by his parents, Salvatore Sollazzo and Catherine Zelino Sollazzo, and his beloved wife, Helena Schmitchen Sollazzo, 1934 - 2007.
