ROCK HALL, Md. - Dorothy R. Murphy, of Rock Hall, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, in Chester River Hospital, Chestertown. She was 86.

Mrs. Murphy was born on Jan. 20, 1922, in Scranton, Pa., daughter of the late Albert and Hanna Jane Platt Schoonover.

Mrs. Murphy had lived in Derwood Park, Pa., where she raised her family until moving to Rock Hall in 1968.

She was a member of St. Paul's Kent Episcopal Church, the Rock Hall Seniors, and Sgt. Preston Ashley Post 228 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Murphy attended the Medical Adult Day Care Center in Chestertown.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Gerald James Murphy Sr. in 2000; a son, Gerald J. Murphy Jr.; a granddaughter, Ann Murphy; and grandson, Jarrett Taylor Jr.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by six children, Russell J. Murphy Sr. of Milford, Del., Albert A. Murphy and his wife Barbara of Lothian, Dorothy O'Melia of Rock Hall, Patricia M. Murphy of Chestertown, Robert C. Murphy and his wife Cathy of Milford, and James M. Murphy and his wife Sandy of Gainesville, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Jane Murphy of Turnersville, N.J.; two sisters, Mary Fletcher of Scranton, and Hannah Crosby of Dixon City, Pa.; two brothers, Jack Schoonover of Banning, Calif., and Ronald Schoonover of Chestertown; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and her godchild, Mary Jane Anderson of New Castle, Del.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, and also from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday.

Graveside services will be noon in St. Paul's Cemetery, 7600 Sandy Bottom Road, Chestertown.

Memorials may be offered to the Kent County Medical Adult Day Care Center, P.O. Box 359, Chestertown, MD 21620; or the Rock Hall Fire Co., P.O. Box 577, Rock Hall, MD 21661.
