SMYRNA - Dorothy E. Richards, 90, of Smyrna, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, after a long illness. She was the daughter of Arthur and Mary Murphy of Swedesboro, N.J. She was born in Camden, N.J., and raised in Swedesboro, living there until 1951 when she and her husband, John moved to Smyrna. Dot loved dancing and taught dancing when she was in high school. She loved working in the yard and in her home with John. They met when they were working at the Edgar F. Hurff Cannery in Swedesboro. Dot and John were married in April of 1942 and settled in Swedesboro until moving to Smyrna. Although in failing health the last five years Dot insisted on remaining as independent as possible. She always enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She was an avid card player, enjoyed card games more for the conversations which were part of the setting than for the competition. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, John; three sisters, Mildred Herman of Monroeville, N.J., Catherine Thomas of Pittman, N.J., and Helen Hunt of Swedesboro; six nephews and five nieces. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her son, John G. Richards Jr.; one sister, Evelyn Hunt; and two brothers, Arthur and Richard. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 12 noon at Faries Funeral Chapel located on 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 11 am. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of Smyrna, 118 West Commerce St. Smyrna, DE 19977.
