MILFORD - Doris C. Fry, 83, of Milford died peacefully, surrounded by her family, after a six year battle with pancreatic cancer. She and her husband have owned and operated Milford Bowling Lanes since 1969. They also have a family farming operation along with their sons and grandsons. She was born in Laurel and raised by her grandparents Star and Marquis Callaway who she referred to as Mom and Pop. She was preceded in death by her son, Mike Fry, who was and is missed as an instrumental part of the farm. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Carlton and Helen Callaway; brother, Bobby Calloway; and sisters, Thelma Parsons and Betty Grazela. She is survived by her husband, D. Ernest Fry; son, Jeff Fry and wife Karen; daughter, Judy Killen; and daughter in law, Selena Fry; grandchildren, Erin, Jennifer, Jason and wife Morgan, Chad, and Brandy Fry, Katie and Cody Killen; great grandsons, Trent Fry and Briar Jones; brothers, Jim, Bill, Levi and Kenneth Callaway; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a graduate of Laurel High School and the Milford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Up until last year, due to her health, she never missed her yearly high school class reunion. She was a member of Calvary Methodist Church, Delaware Sports Hall of Fame, Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame and the Lower Delaware Bowling Hall of Fame. She was also one of the first women to ride on the ambulance with the Carlisle Fire Company. Her greatest personal achievement was being recognized for her ability on the basketball court, done all for the love of the game and in good sportsmanship. To the best of our knowledge, she still holds the record for most points (58) scored in one game for Delaware girl's high school basketball. Doris had a strong opinion and was not afraid to voice her opinion. Her love of sports kept many youth on the straight and narrow. This was evident in her coaching of the Junior Bowling Leagues at Milford Lanes and at the Stevenson House where she was a nurse and enjoyed playing basketball with the residents. She could often be heard saying "Suck it up" and "Don't make me put a knot on your head" as part of her tough love. Funeral Services will be at 12 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2015 in the Chapel of Berry Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front Street, Milford, where friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a viewing on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 or one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
