Clara Mattern Fifer, 92

DOVER - Clara Mattern Fifer, of Dover, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal friend, passed peacefully of natural causes to go home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008. She was 92.

Clara was born March 17, 1915, in Trenton, N.J., daughter of the late Edward and Mae Mattern.

Her family moved to Dover when she was a child, where she attended Dover High School and Peoples Church.

Clara became acquainted with Harvey, son of a prominent Wyoming area farmer. They were married on March 31, 1934, and enjoyed 64 productive years on their farm near Rising Sun.

Clara accepted the farm life and relished the many responsibilities essential in keeping a large family healthy and happy.

Faith was a major part of their life together. They were active members of Wyoming United Methodist Church.

Clara was a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother. Her love of children led her to teach Sunday school for many years.

She belonged to Women's Society of Christian Service and was a member of the Rising Sun Community Club for more than 50 years, serving as president from 1950-52 and receiving a 50-year service pin in 1997.

Later in life she also enjoyed working with Meals On Wheels ministry.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harvey P. Fifer, in April 1998; a brother, Charles C. Mattern; a daughter, Carol Lee Stewart; and a son-in-law, David R. Williams.

Clara is survived by three daughters, Patricia and her husband Bruce R. Walton of Magnolia, Yvonne Williams and Margaret Mosher and husband Gilbert of Dover; a son, H. Parker Fifer Jr. of Magnolia; 11 grandchildren, Deborah L. Webb, Bruce R. Walton Jr., David P. Walton, D. Michael Williams, Jeffrey T. Williams, Gregory S. Williams, Tammy S. Whitsett, Pamela F. Carron, Ian Stewart, Jennifer F. Metheny, and Julie Bishop; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary Fries Fifer of Frederick, Md.; and extended family of many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to all the staff of Westminster Village Assisted Living in the Chapelwood unit who lovingly cared for our dear mother, who was affectionately called Mom-Mom.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Wyoming United Methodist Church, 107 Broad St., Wyoming.

Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.

Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Instead of flowers, the family requests contributions to Wyoming United Methodist Church Building Fund, 112 Broad St., Wyoming, DE 19934; or to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Highway, Dover, DE 19901
