LACKAWAXEN, Pa. - Charley Zaimes of Lackawaxen, a newsman, sportsman and businessman, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, in Lackawaxen. He was 87.
He was an editor, photographer, reporter and columnist for newspapers in Middletown, N.Y., Newburgh, N.Y., Allentown, Pa., and Harrisburg, Pa.
He also was a radio newscaster, commentator and news director for radio stations in Middletown and Allentown.
He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of deadly flooding in eastern Pennsylvania in 1955.
He was a member of the White House press corps in 1942, and an accredited war correspondent in 1942-43.
A lifelong sportsman, he wrote a hunting and fishing column that appeared in newspapers more than 40 years, until 2002.
He was managing editor and co-owner of Angler's News newspaper in New Jersey.
He co-owned sporting goods and marine businesses in Margate, N.J., where he was a party boat captain, and Lackawaxen.
He was public relations director of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board from 1965-70.
Survivors include his companion, Patricia Murphy of Lackawaxen; sons, Dimitri of Lackawaxen and Jon of Felton, Del.; Jon's spouse, Dr. Jeanette M.S. Zaimes; a grandson, Adam Zaimes of Felton; a brother, Nick Zaimes of Washington; and his nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Lackawaxen Township Volunteer Fire Department.
