RIDGELY, Md. - Charles Thomas Dean Jr., of Ridgely, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at the Hospice of Queen Anne's in Centreville, Md., after an eight-year battle with cancer. He was 73. Known as Tommy, Mr. Dean was born in Georgetown, Del., and lived his entire life on the family farm near Ridgely. He graduated from Valley ForgeMilitaryAcademy near Philadelphia, Pa., and attended the University of Maryland at College Park. He was the son of the late Charles T. Dean, Sr. and Nellie Carol Marie Jackson Dean. Mr. Dean demonstrated a clear appreciation for animals and nature as a dairy and grain farmer. He was a Lifetime Member of the National Holstein Association from which, in 2005, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was involved with the Caroline County Fair Dairy Show and the Maryland State Fair for many years. He was a member of the Caroline County Farm Bureau, a Charter Member of the Caroline Country Club, and had been an active 4-H leader with the community youth. He was a member of the Ridgely United Methodist Church, a member of the University of Maryland Terrapin Club, and had also proudly coached local youth soccer and baseball. Mr. Dean is survived by two sons, Charles T. "Chad" Dean III and his wife Jen of Odenton, and Brad B. Dean of Ridgely; one daughter, Shana Dean of Denton; their mother, Cheryl B. Meekins of Trappe; two sisters, Lora Dean Junkin of Annapolis, and Barbara Harrington of Leland, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Jackson Dean, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his beloved dog, Doog. The funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Ridgely United Methodist Church on Central Ave. in Ridgely. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m., Monday evening at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., in Denton, Md. The interment will be in the DentonCemetery, 24865 Meeting House Road in Denton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests for friends to make memorial donations to the Ridgely United Methodist Church Roof Fund, PO Box 424, Ridgely, MD 21660.
