Charles Samuel 'Charlie' Moore, 70
CLAYTON - Charles Samuel "Charlie" Moore, of Clayton, formerly of Bear, went to be with the Lord, Monday, March 17, 2008, from complications after surgery in Thomas Jefferson Neuroscience Hospital, Philadelphia. He was 70.
Mr. Moore was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Wilmington, the son of the late Charles B. and E. Violette Walker Moore.
Mr. Moore grew up being involved in 4-H Club and farming in the Bear area from the age of 5 until he moved the family farm to Clayton and expanded the farming operation to include chicken production.
He spent countless hours dreaming of building his home and his chicken houses.
Mr. Moore was a longtime member of the Delaware Farm Bureau and enjoyed traveling to their many events.
He also raised ponies for 50 years and along with his father, helped start Bear Pony Raceway in Bear, and was a member of the International Pony Trotting and Pacing Association.
He was an avid bowler and competed in three leagues with the names of his teams being Chicken Pluckers I, Chicken Pluckers II and Chicken Pluckers III, and he also enjoyed working out in the gym.
Mr. Moore was a class of 1955 graduate of Newark High School.
He was known as a kind, caring man who never meant anyone he considered a stranger.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Nancy Gordon Moore; a son, Charles Gordon "Sam" Moore and his wife Catherine of Hartly; a daughter, Lisa Moore Cullen and her husband James of Clayton; two brothers James E. Moore and his wife Elaine of Big Pine, Fla., and David W. Moore and his wife Linda of Bear; two sisters, Elizabeth V. Woerner of Clayton and Mary L. Butler and her husband John of Cumberland, Va.; two grandsons, Wyatt and Jacob; three step-grandchildren, Sarah, James and John; and a step great-grandson, Tre.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Smyrna First Presbyterian Church, 118 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the services.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 100 W. 10th St., Suite 1002, Wilmington DE 19801; or to the Smyrna First Presbyterian Church, 118 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, DE 19977.
Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium Inc., 29 South Main Street, Smyrna.
