MILFORD - Charles S. Lurwick of Milford died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 83.
Mr. Lurwick was born on March 5, 1924, in Philadelphia, son of the late Edgar S. and Mabel (Russell) Lurwick.
He graduated from Northeast High School in Philadelphia with the class of 1942.
Mr. Lurwick was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II with the Anti-Aircraft and Field Artillery division in the European Theatre.
After his tour of duty, he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.
Mr. Lurwick was employed for 24 years as a supervisor for the Steiner Co. in Milford.
After retiring from there in 1978, he worked in construction for 15 years, part of those years with Wright Parker General Contractor in Lincoln and lastly with Hudson Builders in Milton.
Mr. Lurwick was a member of the Milford Senior Center, the Milford Walkers and the Milford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
He was a devoted member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford for 51 years.
Mr. Lurwick was an active participant of the church choir, the Sunshine Bible Class, a member of the Methodist Men, where he served several terms as president, a past superintendent of the Sunday School, served several times on the Administrative Board and as a trustee, was a member and past chairman of the Staff Parish Relations Committee and the Council on Ministries and in 1990 was honored by the church with the Lay Laureate Award.
Mr. Lurwick also gave of his time and talents willingly to serve as a coordinator of the churches facilities for weddings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Russell Lurwick, James M. Lurwick, the Rev. George C. Lurwick and Donald Lurwick; and his sister, Mabel Marlin.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, M. Eleanor Lurwick; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Eleanor and Jeffrey Stempien of Keuka Park, N.Y. and Ruth and Thomas Ashton of Amelia, Va.; five grandchildren, Heather Cole and her husband, Scott, Aimee Stempien, Charles Ashton, Ashley Ashton and Caitlin Ashton; a step-grandson, Zachary Ashton and his wife, Merritt; a great granddaughter, Emmaleigh Stempien; and two step-great-grandchildren, Lindsay Ashton and Benjamin Ashton.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford.
Interment with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church Street, Milford.
Instead of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford, DE 19963.
