Charles 'Smitty' Irwin Smith, 88

DENTON, Md. -- Charles "Smitty" Irwin Smith, of Denton, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2008, in the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. He was 88. Born March, 8, 1920, in Denton to the late William Kirwin and Sarah Nina Hanson Smith. He is survived by five nephews, Gary Cox and Rodney Cordrey both of Denton, Robert Smith of Pennsylvania, Dale Cox of Wilmington, Del., and Stanley Cordrey of North Carolina; two nieces Gerrie Baker of Rocklin, Calif., and Diane Smith of Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann (Callahan) Smith in 1978. Mr. Smith was a 1937 graduate of Caroline High School. He served eight years in the U.S. Navy and 12 years in the U.S. Air Force retiring as a Master Sgt. in 1960. He was then employed by the Maryland State Highway Administration retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Air Force SSgt's Assoc., VFW Caroline Memorial Post 7937, the American Legion 29, and the St. Benedict/St. Elizabeth Catholic Parish. Visitation will be held at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, 106 W. Sunset Ave, Greensboro on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Mass Of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday from St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 1st St., Denton. Burial will be in Greensboro Cemetery.
