TOWNSEND - Carolyn Murray Shaffner, 75, of Townsend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Christiana Hospital in Newark. Born on Jan. 1, 1936, in Wilmington, she was the daughter of the late Robert S. and Florence (Hepburn) Murray. Following graduation from Middletown High School she married, Robert J. Shaffner, on Sept. 25, 1954. Together they raised five loving children and later were blessed with several special grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Prior to raising her family, she worked at and provided secretarial support for David P. Buckson and Playtex. Later, she worked for Mid-Delaware Imaging as a medical transcriptionist until retiring. Carolyn will be remembered as a kind, caring, loving and patient mother, who always was gentle and gracious, yet managed to be strong whenever the need arose. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 40 years, Robert, in 1989; and four siblings, Christiana, R. Charles, Bruce B. and J. William Murray. She leaves a legacy of memories to her five children, Terry Lackie and her husband, Jon, of Punto Gorda, Fla., Vickie Shaffner, George M. Shaffner and his wife, Carolyn, Joseph M. Shaffner, Sr. and his wife, Chris, and Carol Brunner and her husband, Michael, all of Townsend; seven grandchildren, Joseph M. Shaffner Jr. and his wife, Bronwen, Matthew, Mitchell and Andrew Shaffner and Grant and Rachael Brunner; five great-grandchildren, Dylanna, Weston, Evelyn, Dakota, and Abigail Shaffner; three sisters, Patricia Barcus, Sabina Moffitt, and Elizabeth Henderson; two sister-in-laws, Shirley Murray, and Marjorie S. Bennett; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial services will be noon, Thursday, Feb. 24, at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown, where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services. Interment will be held privately at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, where Carolyn will be laid to rest with her loving husband.
