FELTON - Carl R. Moore of Felton died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover, following a short illness. He was 69.
Carl was born Sept. 12, 1937, in Felton, the first child of John C.D. and Lillian V. (Glanden) Moore.
He attended Caesar Rodney High School.
After high school, Carl worked as a mechanic at Bolan Motors, Dover; Webb"s Ford, Milford; and Townsend Brothers, Dover. For a short time, he drove a tractor and trailer for Pizzadili Poultry, hauling chickens from Swift & Co., Felton, to New York. In doing this, he developed a love for trucks which lasted his lifetime. When the subjects of trucks came up in conversation, Carl was always there.
In 1968, he started Moore"s Garage, his own auto repair and towing business. He then built his first wrecker which he later sold, but it was repurchased a few years ago by his sons. It was his pride and joy and maintained as an antique.
In 2002, Carl gave up the repair business. Although he considered himself semi-retired, he continued to do much of the wrecker work, and also served as the "go-fer" once his son, Gary, took over the business.
He enjoyed attending truck shows, frequently taking his antique wreckers for display. He also enjoyed collecting miniature cars and trucks, with Fords always being his preference.
Carl was a life member of the Felton Fire Co., having served in various offices, including president. He served as the Kent County Fire Co. president in 1982-83, and on various committees with the State Firemen"s Association.
He was also director of the Delaware State Fair, where for many years he served on the parking committee, assisting with the shuttles and tractors.
Carl was a member of the Delaware Towing Association, Delaware Chapter of the Antique Club of America, the American Truck Historical Society and the Loyal Order of the Moose.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward R. Moore, in 1968, and Thomas C. Moore, in 2006.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, R. Marie Moore of Felton, whom he married July 21, 1961; his sons, Dale R. Moore and his fiancee Karen Holt of Brentwood, Tenn., and Gary R. Moore and his wife Melissa of Felton; his brothers, John D. Moore and his wife Pat, and Jerry D. Moore and his wife Patti, all of Wyoming; his sisters, Mary Ann Stumpf and her husband Ronald of Felton, Dorothy M. Wilson and her husband Bill of Woodside, and Ann Hansen and her husband David of Smyrna; his grandchildren, Kenny, Adam and Amanda; a sister-in-law, Deborah Moore of Felton; a brother-in-law, Pastor Jay Biggs and his wife Betty of Greenwood; an uncle, Dawson Glanden of Dover; an aunt, Virginia Glanden of Frederica; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Highway, Harrington, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery, Felton.
Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to the Felton Fire Co. Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 946, Felton, DE 19943.
