Carl LeGates, 71 FARMINGTON - Carl LeGates, 71, of Farmington, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. He was born in Felton, the son of the late Frank and Irene LeGates. Carl worked for the State of Delaware as a heavy equipment operator for 37 1/2 years. He was a member of the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company having served the department for over 54 years. Carl had been active with the department up until a couple of month's ago. He was Past President, Fire Police for 20 plus years, fireman of the year in 1985, firefighter of the year in 2003 and served the fire company as a delegate for the Delaware Volunteer Fireman's Association for a very long time. He was also a Life Member of the DelMarVa Fireman's Association, where he was inducted into the DelMarVa Fireman's Association Hall of Fame. He was a Life Member of the Delaware State Fire Police Association and a member and Past President of the Kent County Fire Police Association. He also had the distinction of serving the Town of Farmington as the only part time police officer the town ever had. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Franklin LeGates. He is survived by his wife, Norma Lee LeGates; a daughter, Veronica Harrell, of Bastrop, La.; two sons, Carl I. LeGates, and Ron B. LeGates, both of Farmington; a granddaughter whom he and Norma Lee raised, Bobbi C. Callahan, of Tyrone, Pa.; five grandchildren, Christopher Bader II, Corey LeGates, Alexis LeGates, Samantha Galloway and Michael Galloway; and two great-grandsons, Ethan Robertson, and Hunter Robertson. Funeral services with fireman's honors were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company, S. DuPont Highway, Farmington. Friends called on Monday evening at the Farmington Firehouse from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery, Milford - Harrington Highway, Harrington. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Farmington Volunteer Fire Company, 20920 S. DuPont Highway, Greenwood, DE 19950.
