World traveler, C. Jean McNair passed away peacefully, while accompanied by her loving daughter, the morning of Jan. 2, 2017. She came into the world Feb. 22, 1945 the first child of Jean Roberta Swiggett and Calvin Armstrong Livingston in Salisbury, Md. She was a graduate of Milton High school, class '63. After graduating, she married William J. Mills and had her daughters. She later divorced and began her career as a beautician, small business owner, and single mother. She wasted no time opening up her shop, Hair Etc… 1975 in Dover. Its location moved several times in the 15 plus years she owned it, settling in a location off of Rt. 13, she continued her passion for hairdressing until 2008. Jean lived a full life outside of her career and duties as a mother. She was a traveler and enjoyed her days to the fullest, especially whilst in the company of her best friend and confidant, Sue. What most would consider an ordinary shopping trip, the pair could turn into an exciting scene, often laughter and phrases beginning with "schlemiel, schlemazel," could be heard coming from their shenanigans. She was a politics enthusiast who enjoyed a good debate, often starting with her famous quote "Let me tell you this about that". The recent election gave her much to talk about, many nights she spent muttering profanities about that Clinton family. She was a knitter, a seamstress, a painter, made delicious slick dumplings, and pies, all happening in the kitchen while watching her preferred news channel. Jean met a gentleman, James McNair in 1988, their first date, her daughter's wedding! and the two were immediately inseparable. They grandparented many children throughout their blended families. Together they traveled the world seeing sights from Brazil to Norway, China to Argentina. In December of 2009 they finally tied the knot, after 21 years of courtship- took them long enough! Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved Aunt Virginia and Uncle Clarence; Aunt Ruth; Aunt Lillian; sister, Virginia White; and all of her former husbands, William Mills, Donald Merriman, James D. McNair, II. She will be missed by many, including her faithful pup, Socks; daughters, Melinda Weber, and Terri Mathis; stepchildren, Bobbi, Danny and Toni McNair, Beth Hardy, and Trina Haxton; grandchildren, Clair and Olivia Weber, Kaitlyn and Eric Mathis, Nolan, Lauryn and Anthony McNair, Tyler Hardy, Lyndsey and Hayley Haxton; sister, Victoria Livingston; brother, William; fond nephew, Bill Smith. The family would like to include a special thank you to George Marshall and Janice Baker for the time spent with Jean. A viewing will be held at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E Lebanon Road on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be private at DVMC Bear where she will be interred with James. The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover, DE 19904 to help cover funeral costs. Finally, as Jean parts this world, we shall share her final secret….. CALVA Jean, may you rest in peace.
