DOVER - Betty Jane "BJ" (Hurd) Steffen, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend of many, passed away suddenly on the morning of Nov. 20, 2010. Born Nov. 14, 1941, the youngest daughter of the late George and Mildred Hurd, she was only 69 years old. BJ attended Dover High School, was a licensed Cosmetologist and was very proud of her 1994 A.A.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology from Del Tech. Betty Jane was preceded in death by her sister, Sara; and brother, Joseph, whose wife, Eunice still lives in Dover. BJ is survived by her brothers and sisters, GeorgeAnna Lawing (husband, Max) of Vero Beach, Fla., James Hurd (wife, MaryLou) of Dover, Mary Mantz (husband, Don) of Sun City, Calif., Laura Richter (husband, Kenneth) of Canterbury, Grace Sipple (husband, Lyman) of Dover, Jason Hurd (wife, Margie) of Franklin, N.C., and Clara Mercer (husband, Eugene) of Mendham, N.J. She has two sons, John of Naples, Fla., and Blake (wife, Stacy) of Bear; two grandsons, and many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. Her BFF of more than 60 years was Louise Frear Baylis, currently residing in Naples, Fla. A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Friday Nov. 26, at St. John's Lutheran Church on Lotus St., Dover.
