GOLDSBORO, Md. - Belford "Obie" Edwin Melvin Sr., 81, of Goldsboro, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at the Hospice of Queen Anne, Centreville. He was born Nov. 15, 1929, in Edwardsville, Del., to the late Wilbert and Nellie Kemp Melvin. As a boy Mr. Melvin helped many farmers in the Queen Anne's and Caroline County area. He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. He worked for Playtex of Dover for 42 years, retiring in 1991 as a lab technician. He enjoyed his garden and greenhouse as well as hunting and NASCAR, making things out of wood for his family and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived his wife of 57 years, Sarah Jane Hutchins Melvin; two daughters, Doris Thawley of Queen Anne and Sandra Little and husband John of Goldsboro; two sons, Belford Melvin, Jr. of Mission, Texas, and Richard Melvin and wife Christine of Harrington, Del.; four grandchildren, Rusty Thawley and wife Amber, Shannon Manus and husband Pete, Matthew Melvin and Brittney Melvin; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Thawley and Caleb Melvin; two sisters, Ella Meredith and Mary Kathryn Minner; one brother, George Melvin; and extended family, Joey Selby, Matt Jester and Dan Dulin In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, John Wesley Melvin, Sr. and Wilbert Melvin, Jr. Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, 106 W. Sunset Ave., Greensboro, where a visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
