SEAFORD - Barbara Lewis Nichols died Sunday, September 13, 2015, at Homestead Manor in Denton, Md. Born in Hillside, N.J. on June 11, 1933, Barbara was the daughter of the late Wade Barton and Lucy Olivia Compton Lewis. She grew up spending summers with family at New Jersey's beaches. She married Paul Isaac Nichols, who (as she liked to tell) had been her high school driver's education teacher, on February 23, 1953. They had three children: Lisa, Paul Jr. and William. While raising her family, Barbara took night classes for 16 years at Newark State Teachers College to earn her teaching degree. In 1971, the family moved to Easton, Md. and Barbara taught first grade in Cordova for two decades. She also was an Altar Guild volunteer and lay reader for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Easton. In retirement, she and Paul had moved to Seaford, Del., often visiting Bethany Beach. She volunteered with the Seaford Library and they belonged to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Georgetown. Barbara was a music lover and talented piano player, interests which continued to delight her dedicated caregivers and family, even after she moved to Homestead. She was a gifted seamstress and quilter, and had made a special quilt for each of her seven grandchildren for their high school graduations. She proudly supported the creative, musical, and athletic pursuits of her family by attending plays, band concerts, parades, field hockey and football games, gallery shows and art festivals. She especially enjoyed boating and crabbing on the Tred Avon, family and co-worker gatherings, and beach weeks with her grandchildren. Mrs. Nichols is survived by her daughter Lisa N. Martin and husband Harry of Denton; her sons Paul I. Nichols, Jr. (Laurie) of Lititz, Pa. and William B. Nichols (Lori) of Chambersburg, Pa.; a brother-in-law, John M. Hughes of Easton; grandchildren Carol, Katherine Olivia, Patricia, Jennifer, William, Lindsey and Margaret; two great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Paul, her husband of 56 years, her beloved sister Marilyn L. Hughes, and her brother, Wade Barton Lewis, Jr. A graveside service will be held in the Chapel at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, Del. 19966 at 1 o'clock on Thursday, Sept.17th. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Special thanks to the wonderful staff of Homestead Manor, to Talbot County Retired Teachers Association and to all those who continued to write, call and visit. Arrangements are by Moore Funeral Home, P.A. in Denton. To offer online condolences, please visit moorefuneralhomepa.com
