Avery Curtis Prettyman

Avery CurtisPrettyman, 74

BETHEL - Avery Curtis Prettyman of Bethel passed away Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 74.

Born in Stockton, Md., Mr. Prettyman was a son of the late Paul and Maddie Prettyman.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Prettyman, in 2000; a brother; and two sisters.

Mr. Prettyman worked for 25 years as a mechanic and was a jack of all trades on Woody and Councilman Vance Phillips' Farms. He never met a stranger and was known as a great and talented man.

Mr. Prettyman is survived by his stepsons, John Seward and his wife Mary of Laurel and Herbert Seward of Pittsville; a brother, Paul Prettyman of Stockton; several grandchildren; a host great-grandchildren; his great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Springhill Memory Gardens, Hebron, Md. The Rev. Sam McWillams will officiate.

Lyle M. Short, 85

LONG NECK - Lyle M. Short of Long Neck, formerly of Georgetown and Dover, died peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, in Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach. She was 85.

Mrs. Short was a retired telephone operator with the Diamond State Telephone Co. and a dedicated housewife and mother.

She was an active member of Long Neck United Methodist church as long as her health permitted and enjoyed handicrafts and playing golf.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold B. Short in 1999.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Jr. and his wife Pat of Sarasota, Fla. and Donald and his wife Dianne of Millsboro; four grandchildren, David, Darren, Juli and Michael; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road and Del. 24, Millsboro, where friends may call after 10 a.m.

Interment will be private for family only.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.
