Annie Ricks
SOUTH BEND - On July 20, 2023, in South Bend, Indiana, we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, Annie Florence Ricks, affectionately known as "Aunt Florence" or simply "Flo". She was born on May 20, 1957, in Oakland, California, and brought joy and laughter to the lives of everyone she touched.
Florence was the beloved daughter of the late Columbus B. and Annie Frank Echols Ricks, and a cherished sister to Angie Chamblee (Roland) and Columbus "Burgess" Ricks, Jr. (Hilary). She was deeply loved by her family and had a special bond with her nieces and nephews, Lauren and Alan, Ryan and Nick, Wesley, Amanda (Andrew), and Mikaila (Roland), Jessie, and Philomena, sharing fits of laughter and creating cherished memories together. Her family extended to her beloved cat, Miss Kitty, who provided her with much comfort and companionship for many years.
Florence's passion for learning led her to a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and a fulfilling career in healthcare, and healthcare advocacy. For 13 years, she served as a dedicated registered nurse in a Veterans Affairs hospital's psychiatric unit, making a profound impact on countless lives with her nurturing spirit. Prior to the VA, she served 3 years at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.
Diagnosed with sickle cell anemia from birth, Florence defied the odds, living 66 years with unparalleled courage, strength, and resilience. She transformed her personal challenge into a platform for raising awareness and understanding of the blood disorder, inspiring others with her undying spirit.
Florence was a woman of many goofy and playful antics, often driving her loved ones crazy. But it was precisely those moments that made her all the more endearing and brought a sense of joy and belly-aching laughs to every gathering. Florence's love for all things that sparkled, including gold, rhinestones, and any kind of jewelry, parallels the radiant light she brought to the lives of those around her. Her spirit was infectious.
Preceded in death by her parents, Columbus B. and Annie Frank Echols Ricks, brothers Henry Douglas and Henry Richelieu Ricks, and precious Miss Kitty, Florence's passing reunites her with those loved ones in eternal peace. We remember and celebrate Florence, for the battles she fought, the love she shared, the knowledge she imparted, and the joy she brought into every life she touched.
Visitation at Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635 will be held July 27th at 3:00 p.m. followed by a Memorial service at 4:00. Burial will take place the following Monday, July 31 at 1 p.m. at Sharon Hills Memorial Park in Dover, Delaware.
