SEAFORD - Angelene Elizabeth (Wheatley) Howard of Seaford died Friday, June 22, 2007, at Ruxton Health of Denton, Md. She was 89.
Mrs. Howard was born March 3, 1918, in Galestown, Md., to the late Nellie Bowman and Julius Wright Wheatley.
She attended the one-room school in Galestown and graduated from Hurlock (Md.) High School in 1934. She took a number of courses in international cooking, hotel management and related subjects.
Mrs. Howard was the office manager at Continental Can Co., Hurlock, for eight years.
She went to Washington, D.C., during World War II, where she worked with the Air Transport Command until the end of the war. While there, she was an active member of the Historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church and its various women"s groups.
After the war, Mrs. Howard worked for almost 40 years for law firms in Washington, D.C., including 35 years at Klagsbrunn & Hanes and its successor firms. She retired in 1983.
In 1970, Mrs. Howard married George Rogers Howard of Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia. In 1984, they moved to Seaford, where they joined St. John"s United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women"s Esther Circle and St. John"s Prayer Chain, in which she remained active until her death.
Mrs. Howard volunteered for a number of years with the Delaware Hospice. She was active in the Seaford Republican Women"s Club, the Delaware Federation of Republican Women and the Emmaus Community.
She loved to travel and did so extensively - both in the United States and abroad - and met friends from other states and countries, many of whom she maintained contact with all her life.
Mrs. Howard is survived by her sister, Janice Moore of Hurlock; a niece and nephew, Joyce Spratt of Hurlock and Ronald Moore of Harrisburg, Pa.; a special great-niece, Lisa Schmitt of Federalsburg, Md.; a special great-nephew, Scott Reagan of Seaford; a stepdaughter, Mariann Howard Arms and her husband of Dalton, Ga.; a stepson, George Rogers Howard Jr. of Kennett Square, Pa., and his wife, Sharon O"Melia; five step-grandchildren; and a much-loved cousin, Cynthia Shiles of Seaford.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford. Interment will be in Galestown Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to St. John"s United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 299, Seaford, DE 19973; the Christian Children"s Fund, P.O. Box 26507, Richmond, VA 23261; or to a charity of choice.
