Amelia D. McSweeney, 92

HARRINGTON - Amelia D. McSweeney of Harrington died Thursday, July 19, 2007, in Silver Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dover. She was 92.

Ms. McSweeney was born on the Old Fleming Farm, near Milford, the daughter of the late Andrew S. Sr. and Edith (Watson) Donovan.

Her lifetime career was nursing and she was a member of the American Nurses Association for 50 years. She worked as a registered nurse in several different hospitals on the Eastern Shore as well as private duty nursing.

Ms. McSweeney moved to Chicago, Ill., in 1946, and while there worked in a supervisory capacity in St. Anne"s and Loretta Hospitals.

She returned to Delaware in 1956 where she continued her nursing career until 1976, after which she enjoyed retirement on her farm known as "Irish Acres," caring for her yard and flowers and her many pets.

Ms. McSweeney was a member of St. Bernadette"s Catholic Church, the Harrington Historical Society, the Harrington Century Club, the Harrington Beautification Committee and the Harrington Senior Center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel McSweeney; a sister, Charlotte Johnson; and her brothers, Andrew S. Donovan Jr., John A. Donovan and James N. Donovan.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Doris L. Donovan of Milford, who has been devoted to her well being since the passing of Daniel McSweeney on Dec. 28, 1983; a niece, L. Amelia Maurer of Camden; a nephew, John A. (Tony) Donovan of Newark; three great-nephews; three great-great-nephews; and a great-great-niece.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernadette"s Catholic Church, 109 Dixon St., Harrington, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery, North Walnut Street, Milford.
