CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Amelia (Ladriere) Burke of Chestertown passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, in Chester River Manor, Chestertown. She was 101.
Mrs. Burke was born Feb. 15, 1905, in Spring City, Pa., daughter of the late Emile and Lucia (Gregoire) Ladriere.
She graduated from Salem (W.Va.) College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.
Mrs. Burke was a dedicated teacher who enjoyed her work with grade-school children for 27 years in Harrison County, W.Va., and for eight years in New Castle County, Del.
She was a talented pianist with a special love for all music. She shared her talents as both a singer and musician by staging and directing musicals throughout her teaching career in West Virginia.
Mrs. Burke was the founder and director of the Clarksburg, W.Va., Business & Professional Women's Chorus, a group that entertained at many civic and social events. She was also a member of the honorary sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma. She actively supported the charitable and missionary work of the Franciscan friars through her lifelong membership in St. Anthony's Guild.
She enjoyed traveling and shared fond memories of her trips with her parents and sister to visit her grandparents in Belgium.
In her retirement years, Mrs. Burke especially cherished her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a beloved sister, Luciene "Lucile" (Ladriere) Manion.
She is survived by a daughter and a son-in-law, Margaret and Boyce Failing of Wyoming, Del.; a granddaughter and a grandson-in-law, Victoria and William Pfeifer of Newark, Del.; two grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, Eric and Brenda Failing of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Brandon and Wanda Failing of Dover, Del.; two great-grandsons, Ryan Failing of Dover and Alex Failing of Mechanicsburg; and two great-granddaughters, Emily Pfeifer and Meagan Pfeifer, both of Newark; a nephew, David L. Manion of Joppa Towne.; and two godchildren, Marie Bohlayer of Freeland and Michael Manion of San Diego.
Mass of Christian burial will be noon Tuesday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, South State Street, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Green Lawn Cemetery, Clarksburg.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to support the work of the Franciscan Friars at St. Anthony's Guild, 4 Jersey St., East Rutherford, NJ 07073.
