Alvin H. "Slim" Sylvester, 64
HARRINGTON - Alvin H. "Slim" Sylvester of Harrington died Friday, April 6, 2007, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 64.
Mr. Sylvester was born Oct. 31, 1942, in Smyrna, son of the late Carroll Massey and Helen Virginia (Meredith) Sylvester.
He drove harness race horses throughout the East Coast and Ohio for many years. In 1994, he went to work for DelDOT as an equipment operator, working there for five-and-a-half years until retiring on disability in 2001.
Mr. Sylvester enjoyed watching harness racing when he was not driving in the horse races. He also enjoyed playing cards on Friday nights with his friends, Tony Russo and his son-in-law, Dean, as well as going to Peoples Restaurant every morning to have coffee with his friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Sylvester.
He is survived by his wife of six years, Gloria J. Sylvester; three sisters, Ruth Ann Whalen and her husband, Frankie of Smyrna, Janet Ennis and her husband, Carl of North Carolina and Charlotte Fox and her husband, James of Clayton; a sister-in-law, Ruby Sylvester of Smyrna; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Friday in McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce St., Harrington.
