MILLSBORO - Almetia J. Murray, always 29, passed away peacefully on Dec. 23, 2016, at home surrounded by her loving family and feeling the love of her many friends. She was born to Madge and Winford Brittingham in the living room of that very home some 85 years ago. Almetia lost her beloved husband, Millard F. Murray, III (Mitt), in 2014 after 67 years of marriage; and her son, Mitt IV, in 1987. She now joins them in Heaven. Almetia led a very rewarding and fulfilling life. She owned and operated two small businesses in downtown Millsboro in the 1950's and 1960's. She also worked as a secretary for Sterwin Laboratories at one time. In 1972 she was nominated for and confirmed as the first female Magistrate for the Justice of the Peace Courts for the State of Delaware from which she retired in 1991. In addition to being a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, an entrepreneur and Judge, she had an insatiable desire to help others. This compassionate and caring spirit was bestowed on a multitude of people she called friends. Whether it was bringing flowers or gifts to those that were ill or the thousands of cards she sent to people for every occasion meaningful in their lives She will be dearly missed by her family and so many friends. Almetia is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Layfield (Gary), of Millsboro, Missy Kenworthy (Randy), of Fort Myers, Fla.; and her son, Britt Murray (Bernice), of Georgetown; her grandchildren, Rodney Layfield (Kim), of Georgetown, Derrick Layfield (Sarah), of Georgetown, and Bradley Layfield, of Millsboro and Lacey Davis (Adam), of Fort Myers, Fla.; along with eight great-grandchildren; as well as her sister-in-law, Helen Murray; her nephew, Randy Murray (Sharyn); her nieces, Elaine Rummel and Debbie Brittingham; and her special cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016 at Melson's Funeral Home located at 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call after 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made on her behalf to support research and the cure for AIDS that took her son Mitt so early, or the Jean & Joan Cancer Fund/ Beebe Medical Foundation, a charity very dear to her late husband.
