Albert D. Goldhammer, 80
DOVER - Albert D. Goldhammer of Dover died peacefully April 17, 2007, at home after suffering a stoke. He was 80.
Al was born in Philadelphia, the son of the late Albert David and Winifred Corcoran Goldhammer.
After graduating from High School, he joined the De La Salle Christian Brothers. He graduated from Catholic University with an undergraduate degree in chemistry.
He received a master's degree in religious education from La Salle University and for many years he continued post-graduate study in chemistry during the summers.
For 30 years, Al was an educator.
After seven years as an advertising representative for the Delaware State News, he retired, donating much of his free time as a volunteer with several local organizations.
He was a founding member of the board of The Shepherd Place.
He also participated in the work of the RC&D Emergency Home Repair Project and was recognized by then Gov. Thomas R. Carper as an Outstanding Volunteer.
He served as a certified volunteer with Delaware Hospice for more than five years before health concerns made it necessary to give up his work.
As a faithful member of Holy Cross Parish, Al was a Eucharistic minister and worked with the RCIA program. He also served a term as a member of the parish council.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Winifred Bittle Paxson; and his brother, John Goldhammer.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Judith N. Goldhammer of Dover; his son, Paul David Goldhammer of Los Angeles; two sisters-in-law, Cecilia N. Mickey and Edith N. Ferrante; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St., Dover at noon on Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Catherine Cemetery in Broad Brook, Ct. at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.
Instead of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Al's memory to any of the following charities: Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Highway, Dover, DE 19901; The Christian Brothers, 6001 Ammendale Rd., Beltsville, MD 20705; or Shepherd Place, 1362 S. Governors Ave., Dover , DE 19904.
Arrangements by Michael J. Ambruso Funeral Director Inc., Dover.
