The United States is a prime example of democratic governance, elected by its citizens. However, amid this democratic foundation, geopolitical tensions brew, as China aims to exert control over Taiwan, Russia seeks to prevent Ukraine’s independence (often with support from Donald Trump and Republicans), and Iraq harbors intentions to eradicate Israel. These external actors stand to gain from domestic turmoil in our government and our elections.
None of the think tanks, media outlets or government bodies have adequately protected citizens or examined the upheaval caused by the transformation of the Republican Party into an anti-government entity, fueled by the propaganda of figures like Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. I strongly recommend watching “The Brainwashing of My Dad” by Jen Senko for a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. Limbaugh and Fox News consistently distorted the truth, and Trump further perpetuated falsehoods, eventually leading to Fox News paying over $850 million for spreading Trump’s lies about the election being stolen.
On Jan. 6, 2021, Ashli Babbitt was shot and killed. As of Jan. 5, 2024, more than 460 individuals have been incarcerated for their involvement in the Capitol attack, with 718 having pleaded guilty. Additionally, 147 Republican Congress members voted against certifying Joe Biden’s victory. Three years later, Donald Trump overwhelmingly secured the Republican nomination for 2024, with over 50% of his supporters still believing the 2020 election was stolen. How many individuals have made life-altering decisions based on Trump’s falsehoods, without the elected government officials fulfilling their oath of office?
Article 6 of the Constitution states that federal officials, including members of Congress, “shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation to support this constitution.” U.S. Senate: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
Trump has effectively taken control of the Republican Party, intending to evade prison rather than championing conservative values or sharing resources with those who prioritize principles over his personal interests. Despite his billionaire status, criminal charges, daily lies or attempts to subvert the election, Trump continues to receive financial support from the gullible.
If you do not support Israel, you indirectly support Iraq. If you do not support Ukraine, you effectively endorse Russia’s actions. If you do not support the sale of TikTok, you are indirectly aiding the Chinese government. If you do not condemn attempts to overthrow fair elections by external actors or internal forces, you pose a threat to our national security.
The issue plaguing our nation is the absence of a reliable source of truth. To address this, I propose that each state establish a dedicated webpage and TV program. These platforms would serve to highlight voter issues, accompanied by mandatory comments from elected officials and candidates regarding each issue. Such transparency and accountability could significantly enhance public awareness and promote informed decision making in our democracy. The first issue would be a detailed documentary of the voting process in each state, providing evidence that the 2020 election was not stolen.
