LEWES — A 13-year-old male of Lewes and a 16-year-old male of Rehoboth Beach face charges of possessing a stolen motor vehicle and resisting arrest after a foot pursuit Monday.
In addition, Lewes residents Sean Rodgers and Tonia Perkins, both 18, were charged with hindering prosecution in connection with the incident.
At approximately 9:36 p.m., a trooper observed a silver Kia Soul that had been reported stolen earlier Monday traveling on Nassau Commons Boulevard. The area was canvassed, and the Kia, occupied by two suspects wearing ski masks, was seen in the neighborhood of Whispering Pines, according to authorities.
The suspects, later identified as the 13- and 16-year-old, fled on foot after abandoning the vehicle on a dead-end street, police said. Troopers said they found the 13-year-old hiding in a stranger’s shed and took him into custody without further incident.
While searching for the 16-year-old, officers made contact with Mr. Rodgers and Ms. Perkins at their residence in the 31000 block of Maple Court. The second youth was taken into custody after it was discovered that the two residents repeatedly lied about the suspect hiding in their home, police said.
Mr. Rodgers was taken into custody, and Ms. Perkins was advised there would be a warrant on file for her arrest at Troop 7.
The 13-year-old was charged with receiving stolen property, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, possession of marijuana by a person under 18, resisting arrest and third-degree criminal trespass. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released into the custody of his parent.
The 16-year-old was charged with receiving stolen property, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony and resisting arrest. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released into a parent’s custody.
Mr. Rodgers was charged with hindering prosecution and possession of personal-use marijuana by a person under 21 (civil violation). He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released on his own recognizance.
Ms. Perkins turned herself in Tuesday and was charged with hindering prosecution. She was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on her own recognizance.
