Spampinato: Fairness should be big part of decision for presidency

Retired Army Col. Frank Daniels doesn’t care for President Joe Biden. In fact, he thinks former President Barack Obama is the real president, and he doesn’t like Obama either. In a recent Opinion piece, he lists some of his gripes, then states that Biden has done nothing to improve the lives of Americans (“Will Obama’s policies get a fourth term?” Oct. 10).

We have many problems in this country, and while I, too, agree that immigration is a problem, I also think, first and foremost, policy (the law) needs to be fixed by Congress. Inflation is another problem I recognize, and it’s a complicated one. Some scholars tell us that demand in a pandemic economy surged because of very aggressive fiscal and monetary policies in response to COVID-19. And those aggressive policies were promoted by Donald Trump and Biden.

It’s not fair to say President Biden has not helped Americans. We have record low unemployment. Americans have jobs, and the president’s policies get credit for jobs. Congress passed Biden’s infrastructure bill. It will fix roads, bridges and water systems; create more jobs; and revive the blue-collar economy. And it was passed in bipartisan fashion. Biden has helped Americans by getting this bill passed and passed by both Democrats and Republicans. His actions have resulted in a 40% reduction in Black child poverty. All Americans benefit when we pull any group of children out of poverty. Americans pay more for prescription drugs than other countries. The Biden administration has 10 popular prescription drugs’ prices being negotiated with the pharmaceutical industry. Drugs to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and other conditions will soon be available at lower, controlled prices, improving the lives of Americans.

Col. Daniels points out that, next year, we will elect a president. My point in writing is not to promote Biden but rather to promote fairness. What issues most impact your life? Inflation? Employment? Achieving a solid middle-class career? Look at those who would be president and fairly evaluate his or her plans and track record. Do your homework, find someone who can deliver for you and, while you’re at it, consider what’s fair for the country.
