When Nikki Haley was asked if the Civil War was about slavery, she couldn’t really come up with the right answer. It was about slavery.
If we are going to talk about reparations, then we need to look at reparations for the 360,322 Union soldiers that were killed in the war (“A lingering shadow: why Delaware needs reparations"). These were men who gave their lives for this cause, leaving behind a wife and children who were forced to survive on their own and probably losing their little piece of land that they were hoping to raise their family on. These men paid with their lives!
If you’re going to talk about reparations for the descendants of slaves, then I think it’s only fair that the descendants of these men be considered, also. Slavery was evil, and thanks to these men, it was ended.
