MAGNOLIA — A 63-year-old Magnolia man died in a two-vehicle crash Saturday.
At approximately 5:19 p.m., a Ford Escort was traveling south on Clapham Road, north of Sophers Road, at a high rate of speed, Delaware State Police said. At the same time, a Mazda CX-30 was traveling north on Clapham Road in the same location.
For unknown reasons, police said, the Escort failed to maintain its lane and crossed the centerline of Clapham Road. The CX-30 swerved to the right to avoid the collision but was struck on its left side.
The Escort continued in a southeast direction and exited the road into a wooded area, according to authorities. It came to a stop after rolling onto its right side and hitting a cluster of large trees.
The CX-30 spun on the road and stopped, facing east in the southbound lane.
The Escort’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of kin.
The other driver, a 16-year-old girl from Milford, was not injured. Her 11-year-old passenger was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The road was closed for approximately three-and-a-half hours.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and asks witnesses to contact Master Cpl. W. Booth at 302-698-8451, send a message via the state police Facebook page or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
