Hodne: Shupe got it wrong about GOP, 2024 election

Posted

I have a lot of respect for Rep. Bryan Shupe, R-Milford. He has done so much for Milford, particularly our schools. However, his thoughts on the 2024 elections are either naive or disingenuous (“2024 elections could create political ruling class,” Oct. 27).

I have wondered for years why he has been so silent regarding the sins of his own party, especially in the age of Donald Trump. The GOP is incapable of effective governing. They are a national disgrace, abandoning any principles they may have had in the past in order to secure power at all costs. Instead, the current GOP encourages petty division and only compromises in bad faith. They go out of their way to break our institutions, just so they can say, “I told you so,” when those institutions no longer function.

The GOP is incapable of progress and only knows how to drag society backward. If Mr. Shupe requires proof of this, I encourage him to attend a Milford School District board meeting and listen to Victor “Butch” Elzey for five minutes. The “national dialogue” is thriving in Milford, stoked by “Make America Great Again” hatred and far-right ignorance. When our only reasonable alternative is the Democratic Party, it should come as no surprise to Mr. Shupe or anyone else that Delaware voters prefer a blue supermajority.

If Mr. Shupe really cared about preventing a political monoculture, he would run as a third-party candidate and advocate for ranked choice voting in Delaware. As it stands, I can no longer take him seriously if he chooses to stay Republican.
