Dover woman charged with DUI following vehicle pursuit

DOVER — A 37-year-old Dover woman was charged with DUI and related charges following a vehicle pursuit early Monday, Dover Police spokesman Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said.

According to police, Shafeqah Freeman was driving toward a vehicle collision site on North DuPont Highway at at 5:10 a.m. when she nearly struck an emergency vehicle. Ms. Freeman then fled at a high rate of speed, police said.

Officers attempted to stop Ms. Freeman, police said, and she traveled westbound on Loockerman Street. Ms. Freeman ran several red lights and almost struck several curbs, police said. Officers then terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.

Cpl. Schmid said that officers in the area saw Ms. Freeman’s vehicle stopped near Forest Street and South West Street shortly after the pursuit ended.

Ms. Freeman was taken into custody without incident and determined to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Ms. Freeman was charged with disregarding a police officer signal, failure to yield/change lanes for stopped emergency vehicles, driving under the influence of alcohol and several traffic offenses She was released on an unsecured bond.
