DraftKings apologizes for sports betting offer referencing 9/11 terror attacks

UNDATED (AP) — Sports betting company DraftKings has apologized after using the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to entice people to bet on baseball and football games. The Boston-based company offered users a 9/11-themed promotion titled “Never Forget.” It required the Yankees, Mets and Jets to win their games Monday. That was the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the downing of a passenger jet in a field in Pennsylvania. The tragedy killed nearly 3,000 people. An outcry on social media from people offended by the promotion followed. DraftKings later took it down and apologized.

SpaceX can’t launch its giant rocket again until fixes are made, FAA says

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration says SpaceX must take a series of steps before it can launch its mega rocket again. The FAA said Friday it has closed its investigation into SpaceX’s failed debut of Starship, the world’s biggest rocket. The agency says SpaceX needs to take 63 corrective actions and apply for a modified license before it can launch again. FAA officials say multiple problems led to the April launch explosion and wrecked pad in South Texas. SpaceX founder Elon Musk says he’s improved the rocket and strengthened the pad after the test flight.

Disney, Charter settle cable dispute hours before ‘Monday Night Football’ season opener

UNDATED (AP) — Disney and Charter Communications have settled a dispute that had cut some 15 million cable TV customers off from ESPN and other Disney-owned stations. The two businesses faced a pressing deadline — the year’s first ‘Monday Night Football’ game, that would have left a lot of angry football fans if they hadn't been able to watch the game. It matched the New York Jets against the Buffalo Bills, and many of the affected customers with the Charter-owned Spectrum TV are in the New York area. The companies were seeking to nail an agreement for Spectrum to carry Disney’s stations, made difficult by cord-cutting that has cut into cable’s audience.

Bernie Taupin, Elton John’s lyricist, would like to have a word

UNDATED (AP) — If you’re thinking of checking out the new memoir by Elton John’s lyricist to learn more about the Rocket Man, you’re out of luck. This is Bernie Taupin’s song to sing. “Scattershot: Life, Music, Elton & Me” is a fascinating read for the pictures it paints of the music scene of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s but if it is Elton John you’re after, he writes, he is “in absentia for much of this narrative.” “Scattershot” is the story of an Englishman bewitched by country music and the American West who grows up to supply lyrics to one of rock n ’roll’s all-time superstars and later in life embraces art and becomes a bona fide cowboy.
