Zac Oakley carded back-to-back rounds of 68 on Tuesday to capture the DSGA Delaware Open golf title for the second time in his career.
The Lewes native and former Wesley College standout finished with a seven-under par total of 206, two strokes ahead of both Peter Barron and Henry Angier in the 54-hole golf tournament played at Plantation Lakes Golf & Country Club in Millsboro.
The 40-year-old Oakley, who is a pro at Bidermann Golf Club, also won the Delaware Open in 2015. His dad, Pete, won the 57-year-old tourney six times.
“This is my home state,” Oakley was quoted in a DSGA stsory. “I’m from Sussex County. I really feel comfortable playing golf down here, and now it feels good to call myself a multiple-time Open winner. It’s good to get the second one under my belt.”
Oakley was the only player to finish under par in each of his three rounds. He birdied both No. 16 and No. 18 on his final round on Tuesday to earn the victory.
In his last 36 holes, Oakley tallied seven birdies with just one bogey.
The top eight players in the field all finished under par for the event. Barron was the top-finishing amateur as seven of the top 11 players were pros.
According to the DSGA story, Oakley dealt with a torn tendon in his left foot earlier this year. But he still qualified for the PGA Championship, making his first career appearance in a Major.
“It’s been a good… but long… season so far, said Oakley. “Obviously, making the PGA Championship was massive for me. It was one of the reasons I became a pro, so I could possibly play in a Major like that.
“Being in a cast for seven weeks, it’s been a hard year. But now I’m glad I can say I have two Open trophies.”
College football
Smyrna’s Knight leaves UConn: Former Smyrna High standout Will Knight is no longer with the Connecticut football program.
This was supposed to be the running back’s first season with the Huskies after transferring from Garden City Community College. But Knight is no longer on UConn’s roster after apparently starting preseason camp with the squad.
One media report said that Knight has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. He has already played at Old Dominion, Delaware and Garden City.
In 2019, Knight made second-team All-CAA with the Blue Hens after running for 919 yards and seven touchdowns.
College basketball
Hens to play in Penn event: Delaware men’s basketball will join Penn, Colgate, and Hartford for the inaugural Cathedral Classic at The Palestra in Philadelphia over Thanksgiving weekend.
The four teams will doubleheaders on Nov. 25 to Nov. 27. Ticket information will be announced at a later date.
Both the Blue Hens and Colgate won their conference tournaments last year and played in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, while Hartford competed in the 2021 NCAAs. In addition to Delaware, all three other head coaches have deep Philly ties.
UD’s Martin Ingelsby won the Markward Award as the top high school player in Philadelphia his senior year at Archbishop Carroll, where he played for his father — former Villanova standout Tom Ingelsby — and graduated as that program’s all-time leading scorer.
College field hockey
UD ranked No. 17: The Delaware field hockey team is ranked 17th in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Poll, the organization announced Tuesday.
The poll, which will come out weekly through the conclusion of the season, is voted on by a representative from each Division I team.
The Blue Hens open the season on Friday as VCU visits Rullo Field, followed by a home game against No. 12 Virginia on Sunday.
College softball
Two Hens join UD staff: A couple of graduating members of the Delaware softball team will remain with the program on the coaching staff.
Kailey Christian will serve as the team’s graduate manager, while Megan Stauffer will act as the volunteer assistant coach.
Christian, who graduated from Delaware with a degree in finance this spring, was a key member of the program for three seasons after transferring to UD as a sophomore. She registered a career .244 average with five home runs and 34 RBI.
Stauffer joined the program for the 2022 season as a graduate transfer. In her lone season with the Blue Hens, Megan appeared in 20 games in the circle, registering a 1-1 record with a 2.98 ERA in 47.0 innings. She made 17 appearances out of the bullpen and led the CAA, as well as set a Delaware record, with five saves.
