GREENWOOD — An undefeated regular season has been a topic of conversation since the first day of training camp at Woodbridge High.

On Friday night, the Blue Raiders were able to cross that goal off their list.

Four different players scored rushing touchdowns as Woodbridge knocked off Delmar High 39-7 in a Henlopen Conference Southern Division contest. The Blue Raiders clinched the top seed in the upcoming Division II state tournament and wrapped up the conference title.

Senior running back Terrique Riddick and sophomore running back Jamon Kane paced Woodbridge (6-0 Henlopen South, 10-0 overall) with a pair of rushing touchdowns apiece.

“We wanted to make history we’ve been talking about it all week,” Riddick said. “All the practice, all the running, all the hard work paid off tonight. They say stars shine in the big games so we did it.”

It’s the first time Woodbridge has won the Henlopen South since 1999.

Coming off a 7-3 season where the Blue Raiders made the semifinals of the state tournament, they knew the conference championship was a strong possibility.

“I knew we had a lot coming back from last year,” said Woodbridge coach Ed Manlove. “But it’s up to the kids really. They worked hard in the offseason and put the work in. It’s paying off.”

Woodbridge didn’t waste a lot of time on Friday, Kane scored on a 56-yard rush on the second play of scrimmage.

The Blue Raiders also scored on their second drive which was capped off by a 1-yard rush from Riddick. That touchdown was set up by a 22-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Troy Haynes to senior tight end Blaize Rayford.

The game stayed 14-0 into halftime. Woodbridge picked it up another notch in the second half with four touchdowns. Running backs Kane, Riddick, Antwain Holden and Richard Massey all scored in the second half.

Kane led Woodbridge’s deep stable of running backs with 140 yards on the night. Riddick followed with 127.

“We got talent there,” Manlove said. “If somebody needs a breather we can just put another guy in or try some different wrinkles. It’s a nice problem to have that’s for sure.”

Woodbridge’s stingy defense kept the Wildcats (4-2 Henlopen South, 6-4 overall) off the board for most of the night. The one blemish was a fourth down conversion which resulted in a 4-yard touchdown pass by Jimmy Adkins to Isaac Austin.

The Blue Raiders fell short of sixth shutout of the season but are still averaging just 4.1 points scored against them this year.

“They keep us in every game,” Manlove said. “Even if we don’t play well, we’ll be in the game because of them. That’s a nice bonus to have. They just get after it and make plays.”
