SMYRNA — A 45-year-old Smyrna woman died when her vehicle struck a school bus turning onto U.S. 13 early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Delaware State Police did not immediately release the victim’s name, pending notification of next of kin.

Preliminary investigation found the crash happened at approximately 6:06 a.m. when a 2013 Blue Bird School bus drove into the path of a 2008 Kia Spectra while attempting to turn right from Black Diamond Road onto U.S. 13 just north of Smyrna.

The southbound Kia’s right side struck the left side of the bus, police said.

Both vehicles traveled in a southeasterly direction for a short distance, then stopped next to each other in the grass median, police said.

Police said the Kia driver, who investigation found was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics. She was subsequently flown to Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police Aviation (Trooper 4), where she was pronounced dead.

The 60-year-old school bus driver was alone and wearing a seatbelt at the time and was not injured, according to State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit findings.

The bus involved was owned by McCain Bus Service. State Police declined to disclose for which school district the bus was operating and referred that question to McCain Bus Service.

“It was not relevant to the investigation as it was only occupied by the driver,” State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale said.

An attempt to get information from McCain Bus Service was not immediately available.

Neither driver was believed to be impaired at the time of crash, police said.

No charges were filed at the time of the State Police announcement of the crash.

Southbound U.S. 13 traffic was diverted to the right shoulder for approximately three hours as the investigation proceeded and was cleared. The investigation continues, police said.
