SMYRNA — A 40-year-old Newark woman died a day after a two-vehicle crash near the Smyrna Rest Area on southbound U.S. 13, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe.

The woman was wearing a seat belt when her vehicle struck the rear of a tractor trailer at approximately 3:19 p.m. Saturday, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

The 2012 Buick Verano’s font end then became lodged under the 2015 Freightliner. The truck was waiting to make a left turn at the time, police said.

The tractor trailer driver, a 23-year-old man from Levittown, Pennsylvania, was wearing a seatbelt. He was transported to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover with non-life threatening injuries.

The Verano driver was transported to Christiana Hospital in Newark. Her name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.
U.S. 13 southbound was closed for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
