TRENTON, N.J. — For just over a quarter on Saturday, Wesley College looked like a football team playing on only four days’ rest.

But the Wolverines’ high-octane offense is difficult to hold down for very long.

Trailing by a touchdown, fifth-ranked Wesley erupted for 28 second-quarter points and never looked back, posting a 45-14 win over the College of New Jersey in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The victory keeps the Wolverines unbeaten at 4-0 in the NJAC, 5-0 overall.

Quarterback Joe Callahan threw three TD passes to three different receivers in the final nine minutes of the second quarter. His 26-yard scoring pass to Alex Kemp (Caesar Rodney) with 21 seconds left in the half gave the Wolverines a 35-14 lead at intermission.

Callahan completed 22-of-30 passes for the three TDs and 367 yards. The senior also ran for a touchdown.

Callahan did throw just his third interception of the season in the fourth quarter. But then, not only did he make the tackle on the return, but he caused a fumble and recovered it to get the ball right back for Wesley.

James Okike (7 catches-119 yards) and Bryce Shade (6 catches-105 yards, 1 TD) both went over 100 receiving yards while Jamar Baynard ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

The Wolverines outgained TCNJ, 583-370, in total yards.

This was Wesley’s first game agains the Lions (0-3, 0-4) since 1997. After an open date and then having last Saturday’s game with Salisbury cancelled by the storm, TCNJ was playing its first game since Sept. 19.

On defense, linebacker Samer Manna led the Wolverines with 11 tackles while safety James Williamson added nine. Cornerback Anthony Brinkley came away with six tackles and an interception and was one of four different Wolverine defenders to record a tackle for a loss.

After falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter, the Wolverines went 86 yards on seven plays and scored on a 12-yard Callahan run which tied the game at 7-7.

On the first play of the second quarter, the Lions regained the lead on a 40-yard pass play that made the score 14-7. But TCNJ went quietly after that.

Wesley allowed eight Lion first downs in the first quarter but just eight more the rest of the way.

Wesley added a third-quarter touchdown on a Baynard run to make it 42-7 entering the final quarter.

Later in the quarter, Eric Speidel capped the Wesley scoring with a 25-yard field goal that made it 45-14 with 7:41 remaining in the game.

Callahan now has 20 TD passes against three interceptions this season. He now has 92 career scoring passes, eight short of Chris Warrick’s school record ... Despite his 100-yard receiving game, Okike went without a TD catch for the first time this season. ... The Wolverines host Kean on Saturday at 1 p.m. on homecoming.
