DOVER — A bye week did not help snap the Delaware State football team’s losing streak.

But now the Hornets do get to play the last team they have beaten.

Delaware State’s losing streak moved to 16 games this past weekend after a 44-3 defeat to MEAC leader North Carolina A&T. Despite the fact the Hornets were idle a week before, they were not able to keep up with the Aggies.

The Hornets will welcome Howard to Alumni Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m. Delaware State downed the Bison in the final game of the 2015 season, which is still its most recent win and is to date the only victory of coach Kenny Carter’s head coaching career.

Howard brings a 2-3 overall record into this year’s contest (1-1 in the MEAC).

Like they have been most of the season, the Hornets were hurt through the air against North Carolina A&T last weekend. Aggies quarterback Lamar Raynard completed 20-of-26 passes for 324 and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Elijah Bell had nine catches for 178 yards.

The Hornets have the worst passing defense in the conference, allowing an average of 303.8 yards a game through the air.

“I don’t get too caught up in statistics when it comes to trying to fix issues,” Carter said. “I get caught up in what you see on film and where people are attacking you.”

Carter did feel like the Hornets made strides during their bye week.

He had breakfast or dinner with each position group over that week to give the players a chance to voice their feedback of what has happened so far this season.

“When you give your kids the opportunity to have conversations in an open and relaxed environment you get a lot of good information,” Carter said. “We know we’re making little mistakes that are the difference in the game. We know we have to bring it all together and prevent little mistakes like that.”

Special teams rolling

One place Delaware State has had success this season has been on special teams.

Kicker Wisdom Nzidee is perfect in all five of his field goal attempt. Nzidee set a personal best when he kicked a 47-yard field goal last week for the Hornets’ only points against North Carolina A&T.

Punter Fidel Romo-Martinez is enjoying another standout season. He is second among all FCS punters in average yards.

Romo-Martinez was quite busy last Saturday, He averaged 47.6 yards on nine punts in the contest, including a season-long 62-yarder, and four that landed inside the Aggie 20-yard line.

Delaware State has also blocked two kicks this season. Since Carter took over before the 2015 season, the Hornets have blocked a combined 15 kicks between field goals, extra points and punts.
