FELTON - Willis J. "Wild Bill" Caldwell of Felton passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his devoted family on Saturday, 10/31/15. Bill was born on 4/8/37 in Kenton, Delaware, son of the late Edward and Cynthia Caldwell. He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters--Edythe Neidig and Carrie Melvin. Bill grew up on the family farm and herded cows to the barn for milking before daybreak at the very early age of 6. During all his school-age years, he continued farming. Hard work for Bill, though, was "nothing but a play thing." In 1956 he began his 43 year career with Playtex in Dover. He worked in the Maintenance Department and was also the company's industrial painter. Of special significance was having the very same supervisor for 38 years who became one of his closest friends, Phil Shulties. Bill was a former member of the Downs Chapel Church and the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge. He also served in the Smyrna Army National Guard from 1955-1961 in the Artillery Company. Bill and his brother Dan were both assigned to the ammunition division. They trained in Dewey Beach; then were housed at Ft. Miles, Cape Henlopen State Park. Bill loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener and landscaper. He enjoyed playing ball and bowling in the Playtex leagues, hunting, boating, camping, clamming, crabbing, fishing, and pulling water skiers. Games like horseshoes, pucks, and corn hole were high on his recreation list, but his favorite past time was a bonfire in the back yard. Bill was a caring, kind, honest, patient, strong, very loving man and nobody was a stranger to him. Always an optimist, never a complainer, and definitely the life of any party. He is survived by his devoted wife of over 19 years, Debbie Caldwell; a magnificent mother-in-law, Hazel Harris of Felton; and his first wife and friend, Mildred "Millie" Caldwell of Venice, Florida, mother of his 4 children. His surviving children are Kenny Caldwell (Lisa) of Marydel; Cathy Sim (Theresa) of Felton; Laurie Biddle (Mark) of Dover; Dave Caldwell (Hope) of Hartly; a very special son-in-law Randy Sim of Felton; 4 grandchildren, Beth Colona, Chad Caldwell, Shannon Biddle, and Erin Biddle; one great granddaughter, Maeva Colona; siblings Mary Williams, Eddie Caldwell (Eleanor), Dan Caldwell (Betty), Louis Caldwell (Jean), and Betty Ann McGinnis (Frank); several nieces, nephews and very special friends. Bill also leaves behind 3 step-children that he loved very much: Amanda Fisher of Felton, the "Lil Woman" with whom he had a unique bond; Jeffrey Fisher of Franklin, NC; and Mickey Fisher of Wilmington, NC. And last but not least, Bill has departed from his most cherished canine companion, MADJYC, his 11 year old chocolate lab. A Celebration of Life will he held on Sunday 11/15/15 at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover, Delaware. Family and friends may call at 1:30 p.m.; fellowship will be held after paying tribute to "Wild Bill." In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901. To share memories and offer condolences to the family, please visit www.torbertfuneral.com
