COACHES: Delaware — Danny Rocco (30-21, 5th season at UD; 120-63, 15th season overall); William & Mary — Mike London (12-11, 3rd season at William & Mary; 74-72, 13th season overall).
NATIONAL RANKING: William & Mary is ranked No. 20 in STATS FCS poll.
CAA: Delaware — 2-3; William & Mary — 4-1.
LAST WEEK: Delaware beat Dixie State, 17-10; William & Mary beat No. 4 Villanova, 31-18.
SERIES: Delaware leads, 24-18.
LAST MEETING: Delaware won 17-0, in 2017.
KEYS TO THE GAME: Delaware faces another must-win game if it wants to remain in the FCS playoff conversation. But the Blue Hens’ seven-point win over winless Dixie State didn’t do anything to instill confidence that they can string together four straight wins. Delaware still seems capable of playing well at times but its inability to put up a healthy number of points makes every game a struggle right now. The Hens are averaging just 19.1 ppg. Among CAA teams, only winless Albany has scored fewer touchdowns than the Hens (17). And it’s the first time Delaware has gone six straight games without scoring more than 20 points in a contest since 1960. ... On the other hand, Coach Rocco talked this week about opening things up offensively somewhat to try to find a few more big plays. While that sounds interesting, it’s not going to help matters if it leads to more Delaware turnovers. And the Tribe has forced a remarkable 10 turnovers in the past two games, including eight interceptions. ... On the other side of the ball, William & Mary leads the league in rushing (216.9 ypg). A week ago, the Tribe held the ball for twice as long as Villanova. The Hens are going to have try to force William & Mary into kicking FGs instead of scoring TDs and then find a way to score enough points to win.
NOTES: Delaware leads the CAA with the fewest penalties (32) and the fewest penalty yards per game (35.63). ... Thyrick Pitts is the 21st player in UD history with 100 career receptions. ... Senior running back Dejoun Lee is 10th on the Hens’ all-time rushing list (2,326 yards). He needs 14 yards to pass Billy Armstrong for ninth lace and 48 yards to pass Gary Kahoe for eighth. ... Delaware is 14-6 vs. William & Mary in Newark. ... The Hens are on the road next week for a 2 p.m. game at Richmond.
