RESPONSES TO QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What are your storm stories?

Posted

Dover and the surrounding areas quickly became a scene of destruction Thursday, Aug. 20, as at least one tornado spun its way through Kent County. Where were you when the storms developed? What actions did you take? Were you impressed with the emergency response?

  • The tornadoes happened in areas between five and 20 minutes from where we live. We had no damage to the house or property, just a lot of sitting water. I looked outside every so often but saw no funnel clouds nor rainbows when it was raining and sunny at same time. I watched the storm through the windows, not really concerned, until the reports started coming in about tornadoes doing damage. — Tiffany Rumbley
  • I didn’t realize the extent of the damage until the morning after. I heard the crews worked all through the night, clearing the roads and getting the power back on. They deserve extreme kudos for a fantastic job! — Ellen Hart Richardson
  • Dover was lucky. Even though it looked really bad, no one was hurt or killed. Other places have a lot more devastating damage when they occur. — Dennis Orlando Jr.
  • With this storm, I was at work as we got the outside edge of it, and it wasn’t that bad, just a lot of rain. Regarding the amount of damage and emergency responses, I’m not impressed at all. There was barely anything but some knocked-down trees and some 30-40-year-old roofs that had the nails pulled. Yes, I’m glad no one was hurt, but we’re also lucky the storm was not that powerful. — Kyle Hendrix
  • The Dover Little League was hit hard that night. We have major damage to our fields and facility. We are run 100% by volunteers. We are so thankful for our community, which has already rallied behind us, offering support any way they can. — Tamara Hartzell
  • Just because the news about the damage at the Dover Little League is widespread doesn’t mean that the state is seeing what help and awareness these kids and families need, so they can still actually have a playable season. Our league has families in every type of situation. For most, this is the only outlet they have. Now, a disaster that was uncontrollable could prevent that from happening for hundreds of kids. So, I don’t care that it’s on social media. I hope every news outlet has it on repeat. — Savannah Coker
  • It’s very sad. I hope everyone is OK. — Louie Guzman
