Trey Mears’ two-out single scored Deshawn Aiken with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wesley College edged No. 12 Oswego State, 4-3, in baseball on Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers won the opener of the doubleheader, 7-2, to hand the Wolverines (4-1) their first loss of the season.

In the nightcap, Wesley trailed 2-0 when Cody Ellis cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left field line to give the Wolverines a 3-2 advantage. Oswego’s Eric Hamilton tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth with a leadoff home run to left field.

Pitcher Cody Simet earned the complete-game victory, striking out four while giving up only four hits, two walks and two earned runs. Mears and Will Barton each had two hits.

Chris Seibert had an RBI single in the opener while Michael Piccirillo scored from third on a sacrifice fly to center by Chris Bramble. Mike Calvarese went 2-for-2 with a double.

Delaware State 7, The Citadel 1: Dover High grad Garrett Lawson threw seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five, to highlight the Hornets’ victory.

Lawson (1-1), a freshman, did not allow a hit after giving up a single to the third batter he faced in the game. He retired the side in order in the third, fifth and sixth innings in recording his first collegiate win.

In his two college starts, Lawson has allowed just three runs, two earned, while striking out nine and walking three in 13.2 innings. His earned run average dropped to 1.32.

Freshman Jared Gillis (Smyrna) drove in two runs, while Ciaran Devenney had two hits and a RBI and Evan Regez was 2-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Hornets’ eight-hit attack. DelState (2-5) snapped a five-game losing streak.

Delaware 4, Kentucky 3: The Blue Hens (2-5) rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to down the Wildcats in the final game of the Old Dominion Tournament.

Delaware received a single from Nick Tierno that loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly from Jordan Glover cut the Kentucky lead to 3-1.

With two outs in the frame, the Hens then got back-to-back doubles from designated hitter Doug Trimble and first baseman Nick Patten to take a 4-3 lead.

Trimble’s double scored a run and put runners on second and third, while Patten’s cleared the bases, plating the tying and go-ahead runs.

“Today’s win was a great comeback for our guys as well as our program,” said coach Jim Sherman. “We got an outstanding start from (Kevin) Milley, and a pair of lights-out relief appearances from (James) Meeker and (Ron) Marinaccio. We got big time hits from (Doug) Trimble and (Nick) Patten. It was great to see our guys come through when we needed it.”

Marinaccio retired the Kentucky side in order in the ninth on just 12 pitches, striking out a pair of Wildcat batters.

Sunday’s win is the first victory over an SEC opponent since Delaware defeated South Carolina in the 1983 NCAA Tournament.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 69, Charleston 56: Behind a career-game from sophomore Nicole Enabosi, the Blue Hens grabbed a much-needed win on Sunday.

Enabosi registered a career-high 26 points while shooting 10-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the foul line. The forward added 16 rebounds, which is just one shy of her career best, with four assists and two steals in 36 minutes.

Seniors Erika Brown and Hannah Jardine collected 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Delaware. Brown tied a career-high with nine rebounds while Jardine added five rebounds.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Delaware (9-8 CAA, 15-13 overall). The Hens are now locked into being either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament.

“I really thought everybody stepped up today,” said coach Tina Martin. “Everyone has been playing their hearts out and I thought they all did an outstanding job. It was nice to see us execute, knock down shots, attack the basket and get on the boards. ... This is a big win for us. There are so many good teams in this league that it’s tough to get wins on the road.”

College softball

Wesley sweeps Swarthmore: Wesley used a four-run fifth inning in the opener before sweeping Swarthmore, 6-3, 14-5, in a nonocnference twinbill.

After trailing 3-0 in the opener, the Wolverines (4-0) four-run fifth was highlighted by Nina Marcano’s two-run single to left field.

Marcano and Ashley Royer both went 2-for-4 while pitcher Lindsay Siok (Milford) struck out five batters to earn the complete game victory.

In the nightcap, the Wolverines scored in every inning except the fourth to earn the win. Wesley batted around in the fifth to pile on seven runs of insurance. Lauren Hoffman came off the bench to deliver a two-run double to left center while Royer hit a triple to right field that plated two runs.

Siok came in relief to also pick up the win in the back half of the doubleheader.
