NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Wesley College football team battled on the road in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action but couldn’t get a score late in falling to the Christopher Newport Captains, 16-14 in Saturday’s 2018 regular season finale.

CNU took a 10-0 lead in the first half after a Dylan Curran field goal in the first quarter and a fake field goal five-yard touchdown run by Curran in the second quarter. Wesley showed its big play ability with a 65-yard touchdown reception by Alex Kemp from Khaaliq Burroughs with 1:20 left in the first half.

An interception by Isiah Mitchell would give Wesley another chance to score before the halftime break but a penalty would push Wesley out of field goal range and off the board.

CNU stretched its lead to 13-7 early in the third quarter but Wesley would take the lead on their opening drive of the fourth quarter. Wesley capped off a 14-play, 98-yard drive with an E.J. Lee 11-yard touchdown run with 11:02 to go in regulation. Nick Bruhn’s extra point would give Wesley the 14-13 lead.

CNU took the lead back with 5:10 left in regulation with a 45-yard field goal by Curran.

Wesley had a chance to take the lead when they had the ball and had a drive going with 2:23 left in regulation. A first down completion by Burroughs to Corterris Simpson put the ball at the CNU 15-yard line with seconds left in the game. After confusion with the clock after a first down, Wesley didn’t have a chance to stop the clock.

The defense once again performed well for Wesley, limiting the second best offense in the NJAC to 221 yards of total offense. Isiah Mitchell would pick off CNU’s Jack Anderson twice in the game. Coray Williams and Nazir Williams notched 11 and 10 tackles

respectively. Dante Daniel registered nine tackles while Cappadonna Miller and Daquay-Harris Winbush each made six stops. Will Scott tallied two sacks.

Alex Kemp caught a season best 10 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. E.J. Lee combined for 139 yards of total offense. Lee scampered for 109 yards on the ground on 24 totes and 30 receiving yards on six catches.

Khaaliq Burroughs went 28-for-41 for 308 yards and a touchdown.

Wesley (64, 54 NJAC) will wait for a potential Eastern College Athletic Conference bowl game. The bids will be announced on Monday.
