LAUREL — A welfare check at a truck stop led to multiple felony charges against a 43-year-old Laurel man Tuesday, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said.
Jerome M. Slavinskas III was located after troopers were dispatched to Oasis Travel Plaza at approximately 1:02 a.m. to check on the welfare of an unconscious male in the driver seat of a red Chevrolet S-10 pickup.
Upon arrival, Cpl. Pepper said, troopers found the vehicle at the gas pumps with Mr. Slavinskas passed out inside. Troopers were able to wake him, and during their interaction, he displayed signs of being under the influence. An investigation ensued, during which Mr. Slavinskas was found with approximately 2.09 grams of marijuana and an undisclosed amount of crystal meth.
In addition, a vehicle search located two firearms, a crossbow and rounds of ammunition, police said.
Mr. Slavinskas was taken into custody without incident and charged with possession of a firearm by a person prohibited (three counts), possession of ammunition by a person prohibited (two counts), possession of a firearm while under the influence, third-offense driving under the influence of drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, driving with an expired license, failure to have insurance identification in possession and operation of an unregistered motor vehicle. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 3, Georgetown, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on a $53,550 cash bond.
